4th of July

  • 4th of July 250 Year Celebration

It was alot easier back in 1976 when all we had to say was bicentennial, now, 50 years later, its called semiquincentennial. Looking back 50 years ago neither Mom or Dad could remember exactly what they did, they remember the bicentennial minutes on tv and events leading up to it, but on the bicentennial itself neither could remember what they did.

This year we did like every other 4th of July, grilled out and watched the fireworks outside until the bug spray ran out. Probably the same thing we did 50 years ago.

Still it was a fun day and we enjoyed the events leading up to it. Happy 250th Birthday America. (more…)

Once again we did not have to leave our block to see a great firework show. We grilled out with the new grill and pretty much took it easy this 3 day weekend.

  • 2024 4th of July

Another great Fourth of July display in our neighborhood as the skies lit up most of the evening with some awesome fireworks displays.

Since fireworks were legalized in Michigan we have seen some fantastic displays that were put on by our neighbors, so much so we don’t feel a need to go to fireworks shows anymore as we enjoy the creativity of the neighbors.

James had a blast watching the display for over an hour. If there is an issue its that you have to have bug spray on or you will get eaten up by all the bugs, but other than that it was a great Fourth and a wonderful time was had by all.

  • 2023 4th of July

Finally summer is here in full bloom and as usual we celebrated with a grill out. Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, and Steaks were on the menu along with several side salads. Later that evening we enjoyed the fireworks show put on in the neighborhood as the show came from all directions. Even areas of the sky that were blocked with trees could not prevent the fireworks from shining through the branches.

A great time and a great meal were enjoyed by all on this independence day in 2023. Happy 247th Birthday America, we love you!

Fourth of July is always a great time in our family, we used to go to various firework shows around town but since they legalized fireworks in Michigan, there is no need, you simply sit on your porch and watch the show being put on by your neighbors.

This year was a gorgeous summer day in Michigan and James Mom went out and bought some fresh 4th of July decorations to help us celebrate. Usually we set off a few fireworks of our own but this was the first time in decades we didn’t do any. Thats because there are so many others doing the fireworks. (more…)

A beautiful but hot day on this Fourth of July. There is still no baseball so this may be the first time I missed a 4th of July Tiger game in my life. We are listening to satellite radio, the 700 greatest hits are counting down from the 70’s and right now they are at 180. I will try to remember to update this and let you know which song wins. Mom is going with “Love will Keep us together” and Dad is going with “Bridge over Troubled Water”. (I do not know if hard rock is on there or I would go with Stairway to Heaven)

James worked all day on his 5,000 piece puzzle which is the largest he ever tackled. The prior record was a 2,000 piece puzzle. We have three tables in the garage to hold the puzzle, what we are going to do with it once its complete has not been determined because it is huge.

Fireworks galore tonight, since all city and state firework shows have been cancelled due to covid, the people are putting on their own and doing a great job, sounds like a war zone as I type this.

This was simply a perfect day, we spent the morning at a local flea market and although we did not buy much, enjoyed the atmosphere very much. Next a couple inning baseball game along with some swimming made for a fun afternoon. Toss in a barbecue for lunch and a pizza dinner, we finally headed into the evening where the fireworks were non stop for hours, constantly one after another, probably the best fireworks display I ever saw, certainly the longest. James continued his mini tradition of watching some of the fireworks while in his pool, then contributed to the noise with some fire crackers of his own. Sparklers seemed to be the big hit for him, since fireworks have become legal we sort of forgot about sparklers, but James enjoyed them.

The next day we read in the paper that damage had been caused to a home in Dearborn and Lincoln Park by the neighborhood firework display. I guess there is a price for the free show after all.

James found a new way to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, in his pool. James got to witness quite a show as the rockets were red glare most of the night July 4th. The new law makes it legal to shoot off most any type of firework and to be honest it sounded like a war zone in the city. Spectacular displays as close as a few houses away made this a very special Fourth of July.

With the combination of the pool and the fireworks James agreed that this was probably one of his favorite Fourths ever. Later we set off our own fireworks out front (with the pool in the back we did not want to take any chances). Mom joined us as we stayed up till almost midnight fighting the mosquito’s and having a great Fourth of July holiday!

Everyone enjoyed sleeping in the next day as we all “seized the moment” this year!

  • 4th of July 2013

This was the first year we let James light off his own fireworks. He picked out some at the fireworks shop (there are so many now that fireworks are legal in Michigan) and Dad picked out some classics such as the tank and those black worms.

Well, the new tanks stink, they do not roll and only shoot sparks, and the worms were almost impossible to light.

James used special firework lighter sticks that reminded me alot of insect repellants – they were only a nickel each – but that way he did not have to deal with a live flame.

Again, we did not use sparklers, Dad remembers those sparkles burning when he was a kid.

All in all a great 4th of July celebration

  • 4th of July Festival and Parade 2013

James and his family attended the 2013 Colon 4th of July Parade. The visit began at the park, then moved to the parade grounds where we watched the largest parade of emergency vehicles that we hav ever seen, then a trip to the magic shop, then the midway where James shot 8 holes of Putt Putt golf and played several games, lunch at the diner, then back to the midway where James won a cake in a cake walk, and then finally back home in time to do fireworks – after everyone had ice cream of course.

The red, white and blue flowers were a gift for Mom from James!
