  • Colon Historical Museum 2022

While at the Abbott Magic Get Together we visited the Colon Historical Museum which has many exhibits that are not magical related. One of our favorites is the printing press exhibit which shows all the work that had to be done to create even a single page of newspaper. Once the page was created, the letters were melted down and reused later.

The museum is run by Joe Ganger who we have known for many years and during the Get Together he dresses up as Harry Blackstone Sr and is available at the museum to help anyone who might have questions about the exhibits. Most of the interest during magic week is for magic of course, but we thought we would document some of the other exhibits that you will find here.

  • VIP Camp Party 2022

Hard to believe another season of VIP Camp is over as it seems like it just started. James had a wonderful time as usual and this year the camp celebrated its final day at the bowling alley.

Once again the day was filled with games and events and while James did not do as well at bowling this year as he did last year, it was still fun and that is what VIP camp is all about. One of James friends Mom (Nicks Mom) invited us to his birthday party which will be celebrated at a Tiger game at Comerica park so we have that to look forward to in the near future.

Dad was able to make this one because he had to take his car in for tires. He dropped the car off before the party and picked it up after so it was a great day all around. (more…)

  • 4th of July 2022

Fourth of July is always a great time in our family, we used to go to various firework shows around town but since they legalized fireworks in Michigan, there is no need, you simply sit on your porch and watch the show being put on by your neighbors.

This year was a gorgeous summer day in Michigan and James Mom went out and bought some fresh 4th of July decorations to help us celebrate. Usually we set off a few fireworks of our own but this was the first time in decades we didn’t do any. Thats because there are so many others doing the fireworks. (more…)

  • Late Spring Landscaping 2022

It been a few weeks since we took our first pics of the spring, and you can see that the entire look has changed, thanks to a couple timely runs to the green houses and also to Mom and her work with planting the bulbs.

We picked up a couple ornaments on our trip up north, one in Mackinaw and another at Past Tense in Lapeer. They are not in their final positions yet.

Anyway with Memorial day coming tomorrow I think we are all set as far as landscaping goes for the rest of 2022, or at least till Halloween. (more…)

  • Past Tense 2022

This was the first time we went to Past Tense since the pandemic, and had a pretty good time. First thing we noticed in the door was 20% off all garden items so Mom took advantage of this to purchase some spinning items for the yard. Past Tense also has year round Christmas and Halloween decorations so we bought a little of both. Some skulls with peeling skins for Dad, and some Christmas ornaments marked 95% off for James. Mom bought some garden items and after it was over and we were on our way home we made our traditional ice cream stop. (more…)

  • Bronners Visit 2022

Memorial Day weekend continued with a trip to Bronners in Frankenmuth. The first thing we noticed when we drove into Frankenmuth was that there was a dog show called “The Dog Bowl” and the city of Frankenmuth was packed with visitors to see this show. However Bronners was not crowded at all and we took advantage of it to enjoy a nice visit to the largest Christmas shop in the land. Perhaps the most exciting new thing we saw was that Dept 56 was putting out a new Munster and Addams Family ceramic houses. We already had the Hawthorne version of the Munsters but we really had nothing on the Addams family so we bought a small Addams family gazebo to go into our ceramic display of haunted houses. • Great Lakes Crossing 2022

Its been a few years since we have been to Great Lakes Crossing and James and Mom really wanted to go. James was looking for games at the game store and Mary was looking for deals at the Women stores.

Dad really did not want to go so he dropped the two off at the shopping complex and went to kill an hour at another attraction.

Great Lakes Crossing is the largest indoor outlet mall in Michigan and this day it was a little busy but not really bad, considering it was Memorial Day weekend. A great time was had by one and all at two different locations in Michigan.

  • Macinaw City 2022

Our first visit since before the pandemic was a successful one. It was the day before the Memorial day crowd would show up so we had the city pretty much to ourselves. Lots of shopping for goodies and t-shirts. Once again we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express there and they were still doing construction on something in the lobby (when we were there last time, there was also construction of some kind going on).

The breakfast was great and everyone had a great time in the city. We did notice that all the kite shops seemed to have disappeared which is unfortunate. For dinner we had pizza and wings two days in a row. Thats why its a vacation. (more…)

  • Early Spring Landscape 2022

As the weather changes in the spring, different flowers pop up from the different bulbs that Mom plants, that way the look of the house changes as we go through the year. Usually we visit a few green houses in the spring to get the right hanging baskets to match the plants already in the ground.

Each spring we go through about 3 bags of mulch in the flower beds as mulch does degrade over time.

The first bulbs to come up in the spring are the tulips, and we have been asked by neighbors if they are real of fake flowers. Some of the tulips alongside the house were planted by James’ Grandma decades ago. (more…)

  • VIP MINI CAMP DAY 2021

It’s great how James and his VIP camp friends get together every December and this year was no different. The VIP Mini Camp Day was held at Skore Lanes in Taylor where everyone got to bowl to their hearts content. Lunch was served at 12:30 which consisted of pizza, fries, pop, and cookies and afterwards games were played with prizes.

Of course the main attraction was seeing friends that you have not seen since the summer. James had a blast and came home with some school supplies for his next semester at Wayne County Community College. A great time was had by all this Christmas Eve Eve and James and his family are now turning their attention to Christmas as this was Dad’s last day of work before the holidays.
