Halloween 2023 Trick or Treat

Trick or Treat was on a beautiful autumn day in Michigan. We had a great turnout of children and James handed out a ton of candy and chips. This year we used the flexible trashcans that say toxic waste for the chips and that made the look of the house that much more spooky.

We had a car in the drive and noticed that the skeleton’s shadow were being cast on the car from the display and that really created a cool effect. I think we took a pic of it.

Lots of compliments from the Trick or Treaters and we really did not miss the giant spider and skeleton horse which were sold at a garage sale earlier in the year. We did add a fountain and creepy bird bath to the display but we liked the display so much better without the spider and horse as it was too cramped in the past.

Halloween 2022

We had another beautiful Halloween night and there were well over a hundred trick or treaters. James handed out trick or treat again and made sure that by the end of the night it was all handed out, even some of the really good stuff that we had hidden away was handed out as it was a very busy Halloween. Afterwards Mom and Dad watched the new Halloween movie (which we both thought was kinda lame). We had done the same thing last year and we thought that Halloween movie was much better. Regardless when all was said and done it was a great Halloween for the entire family! Continue reading “Halloween 2022”

Trick or Treat 2021

Great weather for this years trick or treat, it was overcast all day but it never really rained until about 8pm which is the official trick or treat end time. This year we put out a couple animated figures since it was not windy either. The skeleton prop Grim went over very well with some kids staying on the porch to listen to its clever sayings.

James, Dad, and Mom rotated duties handing out candy and we had a ton of kids show up. Everyone had fun, lots of great costumes were worn, and we are looking forward to next years trick or treat as we figure nature owes us a couple good weather days in a row.

Trick or Treat 2019

We had one of our best Halloween turnouts this year and the weather, despite weather alerts, held on long enough for a great evening of spooks and goblins. While there was a little rain, it was light and very manageable.

For the second year in a row James helped hand out candy and did a really good job getting into the festive spirit of the holiday. James had only a half day of school today so he took the time to carve a pumpkin which was really haunting and truly the icing on the cake for this years display.

As we had done in the past we brought out more decorations from the house for the trick or treaters and we received many compliments on the display.

Trick or Treat 2018

This year was a team effort for handing out candy as James, Mom, and Dad took shifts doing the work. We had the gargantuan spider out front on one side and the skeleton horse and carriage on the other side. Both sides were completely encased in a creepy fence (actually the fence from the back yard sawed in half horizontally and every other board removed) Not only does the fence make the yard look like a creepy graveyard, it also provides some protection of the props from curious visitors.

This year we also eliminated the pumpkin blow molds which made room to create the graveyard. It was a little sad to see the blow molds go but we had used them for the last decade and most if not all were purchased at garage sales. We did save the tombstone blow molds however, since they fit the new theme of a fenced in grave yard.

A pretty decent turn out for trick or treat this year, and the weather was ok which was a pleasant surprise compared to the last 5 years.

Trick or Treat 2017

This year James split time between handing out candy and going trick or treat (just on our block since he is in High School). James had several visitors who had classes with him at Annapolis so that was fun for him, seeing his friends both as a trick or treater and as a candy handler. The weather was good so we moved the giant spider from the back to the front and moved out the skeletons from inside that were set up for the party. This made a very crowded scene that was well received, event the security cameras on the house caught some of the fun video taping all the visitors.

Trick or Treat 2016

James was on his own this Trick or Treat as he headed to a friends house while Mom and Dad held down the fort (James is dressed as a surgeon which we thought was pretty scary). For the first time in three years the weather was nice on Halloween (not only nice but borderline spectacular) so we were able to put out the inflatables and other decorations to enhance our display. We had a great turn out as the kids came in bunches and the vast majority had their parents with them which we think adds to the fun. James came home with a huge load of goodies and had dad drive him to a couple spots that were “traditional Halloween stops” for him. All in all, a great day.

Trick or Treat 2015

James dressed up as Luigi this year, staying with the Mario Brother theme. James set a new record by trick or treating all the way to Academy (the previous record was Grindley which is one block closer. James favorite candy was nerd candy and sometimes Dad could hear him asking “Do you have any nerds?” as he trick or treated.

Mom handed out candy and dressed up as a pizza this year. Probably an average crowd showed up trick or treating due to the light rain which was more of an irritant than anything else.

Trick or Treat 2014

Trick or Treat finally arrived for a very anxious James who only had a half a day of school this day and by the time 6pm came he was ready to go.

James went down Tulane to Dartmouth, then Vassar to Annapolis and back before making his first candy deposit. He then went down Tulane to Annapolis and back for his second deposit, and finally Parker and into Dearborn for his third.

For the third year in a row the weather did not cooperate and we could not put up the inflatables. Always a bummer until Trick or Treat ends then you are glad you don’t have to mess with them at 9pm.

James did a cute pumpkin that was angry birds on one side and pig king on the other. A great day despite the weather (and yes, there were a few white flakes).

Trick or Treat 2013

Without a doubt this was the most brutal trick or treat that I remember. The same rain the shortened the parade continued throughout the day and into trick or treat. Fortunately James was geared for the weather in his weatherman costume (he was a skeleton underneath actually so he was covered for both types of weather.

The day began with turning on the lights in the wee hours of the morning for James bus. The look of the house changes from morning to evening on Halloween night as decorations are added and some taken away. After James had his parade he came home with his parents and we began work on some pumpkins. Once the pumpkins were finished James was ready for trick or treat and was the first one on the block to do so (due to the rainy weather he was the only kid on the block for most of the night).

James made a pretty good haul considering the weather. The turnout was better as the evening progressed but would still be considered light.
