Abbott’s Magic Get Together 2022

We had tickets to the Friday show at the Abbott Magic Get Together and while the event has some of the best magicians in the world during their convention (IE Lance Burton, Mac King), we wanted to see the Friday show because it was an old fashion magic spook show. Starting way back during the Great Depression, magicians would do a magic show before the midnight showing of a B rated horror flick. The magic show always concluded with a black out, where all the lights in the theatre go out and spooks of all manner begin running about the theatre.

The magicians doing the show were world famous magicians John Bundy and Morgan, and it was the first time there was a spook show at Abbotts since World War 2 when Bill Neff did a show in a huge tent.

A great time was had by all. Continue reading “Abbott’s Magic Get Together 2022”

82nd Abbott Get Together 2019

James attended the 82nd Abbott Get Together in Colon Michigan along with his Mom, Dad, and Dynamike the Magician. Mom was hoping to get good seats for the show because her favorite performer, fellow Nashville Native Stephen Bargatze, was performing this particular night. Mary got to know Stephen several years back when he was performing at Abbotts Closeup Convention. When she was a child, she remembered her bus driver was called Sim Bargatze and she wanted to meet Stephen to see if that was a relative of his. She worked with Hank Moorehouse of Abbotts who introduced them and as it turned out, it was Stephens Uncle who drove her on the bus.

The show was great, Stephen was fantastic, and the seats were awesome, thanks to Abbotts for making this a very memorable experience for the whole family. Afterwards we went to the dealers room to see the latest magic for sale and everyone loved the “Devils Candle” effect which would be perfect for Halloween. After watching several demo’s we watched Abbott’s make the presentation of awards to the young magicians who completed in the stage talent contest earlier in the day.

A great time was had by all and we even included a short video of the Devils Candle!

Abbotts 81st Magic Get Together 2018

Wow, did we have a good time at the Abbotts Get Together. Unlike last year, the fireworks were not rained out on Friday and looked awesome. The weather was perfect, perhaps a little on the hot side as it hit 91 degrees on Saturday, but it wasn’t that unbearable heat that sometimes happens in August. We saw several magic shows, the Friday night firework show, street performers, magic dealers, and some of the best magicians in the world. If you have not had a chance to see a Get Together show you should make sure to plan for one next year, as the shows are really incredible but the atmosphere is where the real magic is, just a wonderful bunch of people having fun doing magic.

Abbotts 80th Magic Get Together 2017

We have two weeks each year that are just exhausting due to having so much fun. The week of James’ Halloween Party is one of those weeks and the other is Magic Week in Colon Michigan which features the Abbott Magic Get Together (also James has his VIP camp finale this week so it is truly a busy week for us). Magicians everywhere performing on the streets, performing in tents, performing on stage, and performing in shops. We have been coming to these since James was 2 so he loves it and in that time has been called up on stage twice by magicians to help.

Abbotts 79th Magic Get Together 2016

This year Mom and Dad actually did some work at the Get Together, manning the discount book table and also doing a charity thingy for VIP camp. James was at Howell Nature Center so Mom and Dad had to hold down the fort. But fear not, James came out Saturday to the last day of the Get Together which keeps his streak going at ten (not bad considering he is only 12). We did manage to raise $30 on Wednesday and another $24 on Saturday for VIP camp so I guess we did some good. The annual Magic Get Together is always fun and we always come away from it with a great feeling as we see friends who we only see maybe once or twice a year at the event.

James made the trip up and back interesting as he found a 32,000 piece puzzle (its $300 and its not happening) on the way up, and on the way back enjoyed eating hot wings at his favorite Mexican restaurant.

Abbotts Flea Market 2016

Mary and James worked a table at the 2016 Magic Flea Market which is now known as the Hank Moorehouse Flea Market and Auction in honor of the man who started it almost 40 years ago. James loves this event because he enjoys both selling and buying. The event was very well attended and had many magicians show up either selling or buying magic. In the past we have found some very good values here and sometimes Halloween stuff. After the event we traveled to the Three Amigo’s restaurant in Jackson and feasted on a late Cinco De Mayo meal that tasted that much better because we were all tired from the long day. Once we got home, Mary found a package containing a shirt she won on Ebay so it was a fitting conclusion to a very fun day.

Abbotts 78th Magic Get Together 2015

As our list of annual events really takes hold in late July and early August, we made it to our 8th Magic Get Together in Colon Michigan. This time we split up as Mom stayed at the magic shop and watched a magic show there, while Jame’s and Dad went to the High School and watched another magic show there. James wanted to see the show more than ever this year because Dynamike from Detroit was performing and he is Jame’s favorite magician. James and other kids were invited onstage to see the magic closeup and James really loved that. This stage has seen Blackstone Sr, Blackstone Jr, Lance Burton, Franz Harary, and now it has seen James. After the show we all met up and went to the park, then headed back home with a stop in Jackson where James found a 5000 piece puzzle he wants for his birthday. All in all a great end to a great day.

Abbotts 77th Magic Get Together 2014

With VIP camp ending the same week as Magic Week, James has not been able to spend as much time at Magic Week in Colon as he has in the past, but we still make sure he gets out there for at least one day of fun and magic. James had a blast looking at magic in the dealers room, seeing magic in the street, and seeing magic shows inside. This year was special as it celebrated the 80th birthday of the Abbott Magic Shop in addition to the 77th Magic Get Together. During this event, the small town of Colon doubles in size and becomes the Magic Capital of the World with everything from Vegas quality magic shows to a graveyard tour where many professional magicians are buried.

Next year the dates are August 5-8 if you want to add a little magic to your summer.

Memorial Day Trip to the Magic Capitol

This Memorial Day Weekend began a little differently with a visit to Colon’s “Magic Park” where James got to play at the playground, then it was on to the magic shop to watch some magic. We then ate lunch at Curly’s which had only opened about 2 months earlier (the entire building was ravaged by a fire about two years ago and was completely rebuilt. Curly’s is well known to magicians as they have an annual magic competition on Thursday during the Magic Get Together. The event takes place late in the evening (after the evening magic show) and since its at a bar, its usually a real fun time.,

Lots of people don’t realize that the Magic Capitol of the World is located right here in Michigan, where they have been celebrating magic at their convention since the early thirties.

Abbotts Magic Flea Market 2014

For the third year in a row, Mom worked a flea market table at the annual Abbott Flea Market in Colon Michigan. It was a perfect day and James was able to take advantage of some of the recreational activities at the new park behind the school. James was a big help as he helped label items and such, he has come a long way from his first Flea Market where he told a customer everything was a “nickel”.

In addition to helping Mom sell, James also bought a few tricks, including a glass effect that is a real fooler. Lots of fun for a kid at these events. He also was given a T shirt by one of the dealers and some candy and a “fart maker” by another dealer. How can a kid go wrong?

Afterwards we went to a China buffet and for the first time ever, Mom and Dad got the same fortune cookie message.
