Thanksgiving

  • Thanksgiving 2025

Thanksgiving weekend was an introduction to winter as the beginning was fine fall weather but Saturday came winter, unfortunately the bad weather did not help the Wolverines on Saturday, nor did the dome help the Lions on Thanksgiving as both had disappointing losses.

We did get the Christmas decoration up before the bad weather hit and were nice and cozy all weekend. Great meal by Mom and deviled eggs of course.

Except for the football it was a great Thanksgiving. (more…)

We had a great Thanksgiving this year. We ordered the turkey precooked from Kroger and that took some of the pressure off Mom Thanksgiving morning. We had turkey, stuffing, potatoes, deviled eggs, bean, cranberries, and a very good squash item that tasted wonderful and included bacon. We all settled in to eat and watch the Lions game and they finally won a game on Thanksgiving for the first time in 8 years.

After the Lions game the focus was on swapping out the Thanksgiving decorations (including the last of our blow molds, the light up turkey) and began the transformation from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Later that weekend we got the biggest surprise of all when Michigan beat a 3 touchdown favorite Ohio State team at Ohio State.

The tradition of the Lions loosing on Thanksgiving continued this year, but what made it hurt was that they had already beat the tar out of the Packers while on the road in Green Bay, which would lead one to believe the Lions should at least win when playing in Detroit, but alas the Thanksgiving losing streak continued.

As in the past we put up the Christmas decorations after the Lions game to get in the Christmas spirit, and enjoyed a traditional Turkey dinner. We also enjoyed the parades on TV.

On Saturday we enjoyed a very exciting football game between Michigan and Ohio State and the Wolverines held serve and won the home game, thus sending them to play against Iowa in the Big Ten Championship game.

What a great Thanksgiving holiday we had. It started with Deviled Eggs and just got better as the day progressed. Once again, the Lions lost and it was frustrating as most people though we should have won but due to bad clock management we did not. However the game was competitive and against one of the better teams in the league so all in all it has been much worse.

The Turkey was awesome and so was the stuffing and potatoes. We ate it all weekend long and it was especially good on Saturday when Michigan kind of surprised us with a win at Ohio State without their best offensive player and defensive player.

After the game we began setting up Christmas decorations. (more…)

Despite another trying year with covid we certainly had much to give thanks for. Our Thanksgiving was a complete feast and the deviled eggs were great. We did the turkey a little different, getting a smoked turkey without legs and buying 4 drumsticks separately for a very tasty turkey dinner with all the fixings.

Lions lost again so we began putting up Christmas decorations a day early. Currently the Lions have not won a game (they did manage to tie Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh) and many people including myself thought that a home game against the Bears would be their best chance but once again they lost on a last second field goal.

Another awesome Thanksgiving meal prepared by Mom was center stage for this years day of giving thanks. The pandemic did not make a difference in our Thanksgiving as the Lions still lost badly, next day the coach was fired (shades of the “mooch” era earlier in the century), and the team will again begin rebuilding for the umpteenth time since 1958. Once it became clear that another Lion loss was inevitable before half time (three turnovers in eight plays), work on the Christmas decorations began. Many of our neighbors already have their decorations up because everything is closed due to the pandemic, but we stayed with tradition and waited till the Lions lost to put up ours.

  • Christmas Decorations Set Up Thanksgiving Weekend

It was a different Thanksgiving this year for sure. First the bad, not a good football weekend for any of our teams so lets get that out of the way right away.

Now the good, we had an awesome meal and as soon as the Lions loss was official, began transforming the home from Thanksgiving (about 2 decorations) to Christmas (a whole bunch of decorations). We had purchased new Christmas trees at the after Christmas sales last year and this was the first time we would see what they look like. The living turned into a magic forest of its own with all the trees.

I cannot emphasize enough the financial benefit of purchasing Decorations for Holidays after the Holiday.

What an awesome Thanksgiving we had this year, first watching the parade on TV then chowing down on Turkey and Stuffing. We then watched the Lions lose to the Bears in the Detroit Thanksgiving Day game, a tradition which goes back to the thirties! Later we called Uncle Don to wish him happy birthday as his birthday this year happened to fall on Thanksgiving.

The next day we visited Aunt Peg then began decorating for Christmas.

Saturday was the big game with Ohio state and, unfortunately, Ohio state won relatively easily despite the fact that Michigan was favored.

Despite the lousy football, it was a great time for the family.

  • Thanksgiving at Frankenmuth 2017

We spent the last day (Sunday) of the Thanksgiving holiday up in Frankenmuth MI. Bronners was so crowded we actually could not find a parking place so we skipped ahead to the Mall – where carolers were performing Christmas songs – and had lunch at the Bavarian Inn. We sat in the Snow White room (which is unusual, we usually sit in the little red riding hood room) and were entertained with live music and a visit from Santa. We then went back to Bronners which was a little less crowded and enjoyed the sites and sounds of Christmas.

What a great Thanksgiving it was this year as the Lions won again and took over sole possession of First Place in their division. The meal was again outstanding and we snacked on devil eggs all day long. After the game we began putting up the Christmas decorations and the weather was reasonable as well.

At 6pm their was a black Friday sale at Walmart (on Thursday) and James begged us to take him. The place was an absolute mad house but James did make it and bought a couple things. It also gave us a chance to see what the decorations looked like on our way home.

All in all a very fun day.
